The Golden Rules of Showing Class for Women at Work

The Golden Rules of Showing Class for Women at Work

  • Show elegance and style in the way you dress (instead of rolling out of bed and rushing to work with bed head).
  • Always treat others with respect and never blame.
  • Take responsibility for your errors.
  • Don’t treat other women like enemies.  Instead, encourage and support each other.
  • Stay away from negative people and gossipers.  Once people realize that you won’t join in, they will leave you alone.  There will always be someone at the office that likes to get caught up in work drama.  Hanging around these types of people will only damage your career.
  • Be vigilant about where and when you are socializing and who else can hear you in the office. Don’t bug others who don’t want to hear about your amazing date last night. And please don’t get a reputation in the office for being the social butterfly that never gets any work done.
  • Stick up for yourself when you are treated wrong and don’t be afraid to confront the issue!  When discussing an issue you have, focus on the problem instead of the feeling.  Control your temper.  Listen don’t talk.  Be assertive.

Classes Every College Student Should Take Part 2

Administrative Communication recommended by Classy Career Girl. This memorable class really helped me get my resume ready to apply to jobs. During the class, we practiced answering interview questions in front of the entire class! It was scary but totally helped when I got into the real world.

World Religions recommended by Eric Clark. We live in an extremely diverse world, and it is important to know and understand the religious cultures/traditions of those around us.  It is extremely easy to pass judgement if we do not know about a specific belief system, and we may even develop a deeper respect for all mankind if we know where they are coming from.

Effective Writing recommended by Charles Trapunski. Unbeknown to many students, the requirements for effective writing change dramatically between high school and college. Signing up for any first-year course that is dedicated to explaining the fundamentals of a first-year paper should be mandatory.

We polled out Career Experts for suggestions on classes that every college students — including you! — should take to become more well-rounded individuals and better prepared for integration into the real world.

Speech/Communications recommended by GJ Mueller. Communication is a critical 21st century skill that you will use every single day in your personal and professional relationships. We can always use more practice, guidance, and reflection on communication skills. (Sidebar: Ballroom Dancing was a close second for her! You won’t find many other classes where touching members of the opposite sex is mandatory.)

One class outside of the norm, recommended by Beth Campbell Duke. Taking a class that you wouldn’t normally will allow you to meet a totally new set of people and possibly even their friends. I had a lot of fun taking ‘Popular Culture in the 16th Century’ during my science degree. Expand your horizons and your networks!

Statistics recommended by Tracy Brisson. Even if you’re on a creative career path, taking a statistics class will be a reliable resource for you professionally. You’ll be asked to present data and results over and over again in your career and statistics will teach you how to think about information in different ways.
