1.) Never buy books from the bookstore.

The price markups are ridiculous, and they buy them back at the end of the semester at a fraction of the retail price, if they even buy them back at all. Save yourself the grief and buy them online or from your inner circle of financially struggling classmates. There are two advantages to this: 1.) You get your books at an incredibly cheaper rate, and 2.) You may even be able to sell them back to someone else at the end of the semester for a similar rate, resulting in a more reasonable net loss (or even gain).

Six Tips for Getting into a Full Class (and One on What to Do if You Don’t)

1. Resist making excuses.

It’s an early, important lesson for you in college: Professors care about you, but don’t care for excuses. Profs move to solve problems, so your excuses will just take time away necessary problem solving. Don’t say, “I didn’t register because…” The reasons don’t matter. Bottom line: You need/want the class, so focus on what to do to get in (and read on…).

2. Ask about the purge.

Get in touch with someone in the Registrar’s office and ask, “When do you purge students for nonpayment?” Different colleges manage this in different ways, but often, students on wait list are then moved into the class when existing students don’t pay. Here’s the thing: I can’t tell you how many students on wait list decide they no longer want to be there. This means on the date of the nonpayment purge, you may find openings where there were none previously.

3. E-mail the professor before going to his/her office.

Certainly, you can show up in the prof’s office and beg to be added, but there is likely nothing that the prof can do until the actual first day of class. It’s fine to e-mail the prof instead and say, “I am interested in getting into your CMST 101 class. Should I come to your office to discuss this? Do you have any advice on how students typically get into your class if it is full?”

3. Actually go to the class.

When students come to my office and ask me to sign an add/drop form, I often tell them come to the first class. I have no idea who is actually going to fill the seats and I’m far more likely to sign a student in, even on overload, if I can see the actual number of students seated in front of me. At my college, the wait list shuts down on the first day of class. Therefore, if a student shows up in person, their chances of getting in are far better. So, introduce yourself to the prof after the class ends and say, “I am not enrolled in this class right now but thought I’d come to see if there is room. Is it possible for me to stay in this class?”

4. Stay in touch with the prof.

For my online or hybrid classes (that start on a Wednesday night, usually), I will ask students asking to get in to e-mail me on the first, second, and third day of class so I can watch the roster numbers for changes. With distance education classes, I can’t physically see if a student is going to participate, so I have to wait until day three (or when the introductory post is due) to find out. For the want-to-be enrolled students e-mailing every day and checking in, they have first dibs on space if one comes available. Ask the prof, “Is it all right if I stay in touch with you for a few days to see if the numbers change?”

What research suggests is that we are actually switching back and forth between the demands of the tasks rather than actually simultaneously doing all the tasks. If the tasks require the concurrent sensory input, processing or motor functions, we have to divide our abilities up or split our attention. An instance of two tasks that require the same sensory inputs is when we try to imagine seeing something in the head and seeing what is in front of us.

In the source article (below), it also indicates that multitasking reduces ability to organize and store information, and people who engage in multitasking actually becomes more prone to distractions.

I have spent time clarifying my values and can easily articulate them.
My values are my own. I have not simply adopted them from parents, teachers or other outside influences.
I based my choice of occupation on my deepest values.
My values are in alignment with the company I work for (or own).
My business associates and I regularly examine how we are living up to our values and mission.
I turn down money-making or status-building opportunities when they conflict with my values.
In resolving disputes at work, I look beneath the apparent problem to see if values are being dishonored, and then I seek ways to honor them.
Anyone looking at my life from the outside would see what I value.
I use my values as a guidepost for making decisions. I ask if a particular choice would bring me closer to—or further from—a core value.
When I feel upset, it’s almost always because my values are being trampled—either by me, someone else, or the situation.
I am not easily swayed by others’ opinions when they conflict with my values.
To remain open and flexible, I am willing to re-examine my values to determine whether something is still true for me.
I find creative ways to honor all of my values—even when they conflict with one another.
My work values are in harmony with my personal and relationship values.
When I live according to my values, I feel satisfied and successful throughout my life.

You are going to pay less. Your taxes at an online college don’t include paying for cleaning personnel, electricity, water, building maintenance, construction of new buildings, buying books for the libraries and so on. You are even going to save money from transportation costs because you obviously don’t have to be attending any class. So you won’t be paying for gas, parking space and so on. Unless you want to have your college lesson in the outdoors, somewhere in nature.
You have the ability to create a schedule and take classes according to your free time. If you have a part-time or even a full-time job hence you probably have anywhere between 2 and 10 hours of your day occupied. Unlike traditional college, where you have to attend classes whether you like it or not, here you can leave time for everything, if you have good time management skills.
If you are already an adult person, but would like to get a qualification in order to start a new job, or to learn the latest techniques and discoveries in your area, then an online college is just for you. You won’t feel awkward because you’re around hundreds and thousands of students at the age of 20. You are going to be in the comfort of your own home and, as I already mentioned, study at your own pace.
